After four years, the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia once again released a superior variety of mung bean. The variety called Vima-1, is the engineering product of Beans and Tuber Plants Research Institute Malang attained through artificial crossbreed between male parent C 1973A and female parent 2750A by systematic selection until the MMC 157d Kp-1 line possessing early ripening age and resistant to powdery mildew disease was obtained.
Unlike the Kutilang variety – the variety released in 2004– having shiny seeds- the MMC 157d Kp-1 line later named Vima-1 (the acronym from Vigna sinensis – Malang) has dull/lusterless seeds. A number of superiorities are possessed by Vima -1. From the cultivating aspect, this variety has high yield, is early-ripening and resistant to the powdery mildew disease. The whole pod stem of Vima-1 that is above the canopy becomes a special interest for farmers as it is more easily maintained and harvested.
Since at the beginning, M. Anwari, the breeder engineering this variety made efforts to attain a superior variety mung bean that is liked by both producers and customers.
