Four New Research Professors, a Reward for IAARD on Its 35th Commemoration

IAARD adds the number of its research professors after four of its senior researchers was inaugurated to be research professors by the Director General of Indonesian Institute of Sciences Prof. Umar Anggara Jenie, M.Sc. PhD, as the chairperson of Research Professor Inaugurating Committee. The four new research professors are Prof. Ir. Suwandi, MS and Prof. Dr. Ir. Didi Ardi Suriadikarta, M.Sc. inaugurated on 6 August 2009, as well as Prof. Dr. Tahlim Sudaryanto and Prof. drh. Soeripto, MVS, PhD inaugurated on 11 August 2009 simultaneously started the first day of the Third Agro Innovation Event.

The Director General of Indonesian Institute of Sciences in his speech stated that the number of research professors possessed by IAARD is the same as that owned by Indonesian Institute of Sciences, i.e. 65 persons. However, he reminded that IAARD needs to continuously improve its existence and professionalism in the interest of the state. “I need to remind you that 13 research professors owned by IAARD are approaching or entering the retirement”, he stated.

Meanwhile, the Director General of IAARD Dr. S. Gatot Irianto stated that the works in the forms of applicable concepts and superior, real, beneficial, and can be readily implemented technologies of research professors are continuously expected. “IAARD is an institution that is expected to be always ahead, has a role as a pioneer in agricultural innovations, both in the forms of concepts and technologies”, he emphasized. At the same occasion, the Director General of IAARD emphasized the strategic measures carried out by IAARD in supporting the 2010-2014 Medium Term Development Planning. Those strategic measures are, among others, i) reorientation and trimming agricultural research and development programs that must focus more and be directed on supporting the strategic programs of the department of agriculture, ii) conducting accelerations in producing inventions and innovations for strategic commodities, iii) not inattentive and left behind in trailing the global science and technological dynamism and development, with futuristic and visionary thinking.

Research Professor Orations
In his inaugurating oration, Prof. Tahlim Sudaryanto, a research professor in agricultural economic, expressed his ideas and thought written in an oration entitled “The Acceleration of Poverty Eradication in Rural Areas: Revitalization of the Role of Agricultural Sector”. He stated that the main strategies that need to be implemented to eradicate poverty in rural areas are i) the presence of development acceleration of the agricultural sector, ii) broadening and developing non-agricultural business, especially agro-industries, to improve the added values of agricultural commodities, and iii) the improvement of protection system and social safety network.

Meanwhile, Prof. Soeripto stated that both government policies and collaborations with poultry organizations such as GPPU, GAPPI, and ASOHI are required to improve the poultry health. Moreover, policies are also required related to the dissemination of MGTS-11mutant vaccine technology to poultry farmers to accelerate the control of Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) of chickens. This was expressed in the oration entitled “MGTS-11 Mutant Vaccine technology: An Appropriate Solution for the Control of Chronic Respiratory Disease of chickens”. Prof. Soeripto is a research professor in veterinary bacteriology. Prof. Suwandi, a research professor in plant cultivation, expressed his thought in the oration entitled “Measuring the Need of Plant Nutrient in the Innovation Development of Sustainable Vegetable Cultivation”. Meanwhile, Prof. Didi Ardi Suriadikarta, a research professor in soil fertility, performed an oration entitled ”Studying from the Failure in Managing A Million Hectares Peat Moss Soil towards Sustainable Peat Moss Management”.
