News » Sustainable Food Houses Stole the Spotlight at the World Food Day Celebration, Gorontalo
Sustainable Food Houses (SFH) Model was showcased at the Technologies Exhibition on the top event of World Food Day Observance held in Bone Bolango, Gorontalo, on 18th -22nd October 2011. The model gained the spotlight which highly benefited and directly met the target users. Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) presented the SFH with its theme “Empowering Family Household to overcome the increasing Food Prices towards Food Security”
The concept of SFH is not only to optimally utilize the house yard but also require other elements. There are at least four principles of SFH i.e. food self sufficiency, food diversification based on indigenous food, preservation of food plant genetic resources and, village nurseries. The synergy between all the supporting components of the technologies exhibition has succeeded to actualize the SFH model which is relatively easy to understand and emulate. The Indonesian Agency for Marine Affairs and Fisheries Research and Development (IAMAFRD) also actively contributed to the model by adding up its aquaponic system. According to its researcher, aquaponic is a system that integrates the raising of fish as the main cultivation product (aquaculture) with cultivating plants in water (hydroponics), where the by-products from the aquaculture are filtered out by the plants as vital nutrients which contains NPK fertilizer.
The audiences got an explanation and were shown about village nurseries, for instance on how to plant using embankment, verticulture, polybag methods; cultivating fish on sheeting pond; as well as raising fowls and goats on stall. Those activities are aimed at facilitating the enthusiastic audience to actually devise and develop similar SFH model at home despite their different housing types and yard sizes. Furthermore, a village nursery is the heart of the SFH model from which the distribution of seed is derived. Thus the seeds are certainly produced and distributed to the houses easily.
On the visit to SPH model, the Vice President (VP), accompanied by Ibu Herawati, was enthusiastically sowed vegetables seeds on the prepared plot. The VP said that SFH should be developed broadly and utilizing Indonesian local production seed. Gratefully, the SFH has become the upmost favorable for the audience which were came from various sectors such as farmers, extensions, local civil servants, kindergarten to high school students, as well as open publics. Not only showcased at the WFD event, but after the festivity ended, SFH should also be the pilot project and continue to be maintained so that hopefully will be one of the agro-tourism objects.
