News » “Is Indonesian Food Supply Sufficient to Feed the Nation?”
It’s a quote from the Vice President (VP) in his speech while opening the World Food Day (WFD) which was held in 20 October 2011 in Bone Balango Regency, the Province of Gorontalo. His visit to the WFD observance was accompanied by Minister of Agriculture, FAO Representatives, James Mc. Grane, and also representatives from 21 companion countries.
The global population nowadays has reached 7 billion people and is predicted to exceed 9 billion by the year of 2050. Indonesia has not been in secure level in terms of food availability therefore food insecurity phenomenon will still continue to haunt. The VP said, to cope with food vulnerability, it requires the implementation of appropriate technologies and well-managed natural resources in order to provide sufficient food for the country.
During the event, Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) presented various technology innovations which were divided into four clusters, those are: 1. Sustainable Food Houses, 2. Functional Food, 3. Food Self-sufficiency, and 4. Medicinal and Aromatic Plantation.
On his visit to the IAARD technology exhibition, the VP was interested in the interesting appearance of various vegetables and medicinal plantations which were planted around the sustainable food houses. Furthermore, he was also got an explanation about the development of current research on soybean, rice, as well as corn. Still in the same occasion, VP picked and ate a soybean pod. On the corn field spot, he intentionally held two corn cobs and had an interactive discussion with corn researchers. The identically interesting moment at WFD was that the VP truly concerned about the progress on research particularly in agriculture and also in how the research results were broadly disseminated to farmers, and to further be applied on field.
