Indonesian research Institute for Estate Crops (IRIEC) supports the research and development of various commodities grown on estate crops such as oil palm, rubber, tea, cinchona, coffee, cocoa and sugarcane. This work includes the provision of high-yielding clones and varieties, improved technologies, and specialist expertise.
Research Highlight
IRIEC manages five research centers (each focusing on one or two commodities), and a biotechnology unit. Research covers plant breeding, cultivation techniques, post-harvest handling, biotechnology, management and marketing. These institutes serve the needs of private and government plantations as well as smallholders. While IRIEC is formally part of the IAARD structure, IAARD provides it with technical management services.
IRIEC coordinates research institutes:
- Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute, in Medan
- Indonesian Rubber Institute, in Sungei Putih
- Research Institute for Tea and Cinchona, in Gambung
- Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute, in Jember
- Indonesian Sugar Research Institute, in Pasuruan
